The Prime Directive: Competition versus Cooperation

Who said life is suppose to be easy? It is more about finding the balance between the Fight-or Flight Response and the Peaceful Space Response. As you look around at the natural environment you can see that competition is a central component of life. From the tiniest organisms to the global ecosystem, at every level of existence we see evidence of competition. Even when you try to quiet your mind you must overcome the chatter of what has been called our noisy monkey mind. Competition is present in the inner and outer world, in the micro and the macro manifestations of reality. Even the Dark Matter and Dark Energy that Dr. M. discusses in the Handbook are in a competitive dance with one another.

The natural environment also manifests the characteristics of a cooperative system where each of the parts serves its unique function insuring its own survival through its service to the survival of the whole. This cooperative relationship between planets, animals, insects, and other aspects of the environment appears essential to long term sustainability. Dr. M. wanted to share this story with you!

A very long time ago, three men and their wives lived within view of each other. Each man had a special talent, one a master of wood, another a master of the soil, and the third a master of the animals that lived in their area. Being masters, they were each alpha males, independent, stubborn, and proud. The master of wood built a beautiful home for he and his wife, full of handmade furniture and carved wooden beams. But they had almost no food. In fact, they were slowly starving themselves. From their second story patio they could see the master of the soil and his wife working their land which was full of food that made their mouths water. The master of the soil and his wife had plenty of food but they had only a palm leaf hut as a shelter from the weather and a place to call home. At the edge of the master of the soil’s land, the terrain took a gentle slope into the valley were the master of the soil and his wife could see the master of the animals and his wife grazing and feeding their animals on the dry grass that grew between the slope and the range of mountains that provided a rock canopy as their shelter. Alpha males are by nature more competitive with each other so contrary to their otherwise logical minds, the three masters always took a competitive view of each other’s condition, a fact that kept each of them limited in their condition and in a state of constant stress (Fight-or-Flight Response).

One night, the Enia made the three women dream together. They dreamt that they were together at a common well. They each shared the good news that they were with child, but none of them was smiling. The wife of the master of wood said that she was afraid for her unborn because they had no food. She shared that she and her husband scavenged their barren land at night like animals to find things to cook that no human should each. The wife of the master of the land said that she was afraid because her unborn might not survive if it they had to take shelter under palm leaves from the weather. She added, but her husband is so proud and stubborn. The wife of the master of the animals agreed that their rock canopy was no place to raise a baby and that they need more than milk and eggs to survive. The women dreamt what their husbands would do when they heard the news.

Weeks later, on the same day, each woman announced to her husband the good news that she was pregnant. That night the Enia made the husbands dream together. They dreamt of their wives and their children not having shelter, being without food, and not knowing that a part of the world was green, yellow, and red. The dream triggered the Peaceful Space Response in each of the masters and the next day they met and worked out a plan to cooperate with each other for the sake of their wives, their unborn, and their mutual survival. The plan was the Prime Directive!

The Haiti Earthquake and The Four Desires

In the Handbook On Being Human, vol. I, the Mysterious Dr. M. stresses that the needs, desires, instincts, emotions, and fears that he discusses are innate forces in every human being. It is the commonality of these characteristics that allows us to empathize with each other and to demonstrate compassion. Haiti is just the current heart-wrenching case in point, isn't it? There have been major disasters in the recent past (Katrina, Indonesia, China) and according to Dr. M. and the Enia there will be major and mega disasters in the not so distant future. If we really understood our fragile nature and were focused on meeting the basic survival and self-preservation mandates of our species, we would be much less vulnerable to these kinds of disasters and much better prepared to deal with the aftermath when they do impact members of our global family.

Dr. M. discusses the Desires for New Experiences, Security, a Response, and Recognition. If you recognize the power of these desires in yourself and how your everyday life is built around their fulfillment, then you can empathize with our Haitian brothers and sisters with a deeper level of understanding. These are some of the innate forces erupting behind the faces that you see on the television. "Oh God! This is not something that I every wanted to experience. Was I ungrateful for the little that I had?" Isn't is amazing how a simple curtain across a doorway can give you a relative sense of security? You know what it feels like to have that degree of security violated. So you can truly imagine the level of anxiety and fear that is a part of the Quantum Entity that is now emerging among our brothers and sisters in Haiti. "Mommy, mommy!!!" Have you seen the anguished face of a child who got lost in you local supermarket or Mall? Or maybe, you were one of those children. By touching your own experiences and memories you can identify with the suffering of others. The Haitian children's faces full of tears and void of comprehension.

Empathy and compassion are nurtured by making these kinds of connections and by recognizing and accepting our common nature. We are all The People. Tens of thousands of people, millions praying, hoping, and waiting for a response. And each face in the crowd praying, hoping, and waiting for their moment of recognition. You don't have to reach far, not very deep into your heart or your past to make the connection and feel their pain. It is from that connection with their pain that the Peaceful Space Response emerges in you in the form of Compassion.

The Prime Directive calls each of us to care about the other for in the larger scheme of things we are all part of a single organism and Entity. Make the connection.

The Prime Directive: The Crisis in Haiti

The heartbreaking news this past week was all about the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Unless you have had a similar experienced, it is difficult for us to wrap our minds around the pain and anguish the people are feeling. The crisis in Haiti provides a case in point regarding the Prime Directive. Don't you feel something pulling at you from inside as you watch the news or read an article, as you look at the faces of the people and the magnitude of their losses? And doesn't your heart experience a certain kind of warmth and pride as you think about all of the people around the world who are reaching out to help? Yes! There are logistical problems getting things where they need to be, but the reaching out, the rush to assist, to aid, to save lives can make you want to be a part of that effort. In these moments of crisis the best of who we are as a species comes to the forefront and it can move you to imagine a more perfect world. The crisis in Haiti provides us with an example of the Peaceful Space Response emerging in the face of horrific human suffering. That feeling of connection of spirit is your innate Peaceful Space Response. The actions being taken are an expression of the Prime Directive.

From the standpoint of the Prime Directive, the crisis in Haiti also raises an important question which relates to the level of destruction that the island nation experienced. After so many decades of contact and interaction between the U.S. and Haiti, how is it that Haiti remains one of the poorest and underdeveloped nations in the world while located just a few hundreds of miles from the richest and most powerful nation in the world? Why have the people of Haiti not been more proactively supported in becoming valued and viable economic and political partners and neighbors?  The Prime Directive calls upon us to act in the interests of the whole and each of its parts at all times. Not just in times of crisis and devastation! In the Handbook On Being Human, vol I, Dr. M. predicts that there will be more natural disasters, of increasing magnitude and scope. He also suggests that beginning to teach and live the Prime Directive and the process of Creating Peaceful Space now is the key to being prepared for what is coming.

In the Handbook, Dr. M. outlines the instincts, drives, needs, desires, and wishes that fuel human behavior and influence human choices. He also describes a way of seeing the world that can give us greater understanding of the long term and short term consequences of the choices that each of us make each and every day. We are shaping the future in each moment of the present. It should be obvious that if different choices were made in the past, and if Haiti had been more developed, the level of destruction from this particular earthquake would not have been as great. So people in the past wrote this possibility into the future, and we and our brothers and sisters in Haiti are now experiencing the consequences of those past choices. And the choices that we are making right now will influence the future that will confront us, our children, and our grandchildren for decades and generations to come. According to the Mysterious Dr. M. the Prime Directive and Creating Peaceful Space are about self-determined evolution.

I hope you'll answer the survey questions, make the Prime Directive an important part of your life, recommend the Handbook On Being Human, vol. I to a friend, and share your comments on this Blog.

Balancing Positive and Negative Energies

I just scanned through some of the news blogs I try to follow.  You know what I found!  The failed Christmas Terrorism Attack, Police close N.Y. School after ..., parents killing children, children killing parents, new fronts in the Global War On Terrorism, just to start a short list.  It is enough to make even the perpetual optimist frown.  As I thought about the Headlines and the message in the Handbook about what is coming (the Oku Enia), my mind drifted to the message that runs like a thread through so many of the sacred teachings of the world.  The Holy Qur'an states that humans are born into toil and struggle in this world and that it is a place of trial.  The Buddha stated that this world is a place of suffering because of the attachments we form with things that are not permanent.  The Bible paints the picture of a demonic force that starts out as a serpent in the Garden and ends up as a Dragon that seeks to consume this world by influencing human choices.  Maybe we really should not be so surprised to see so much suffering in this world.  From a scientific perspective we know that the positive and negative do co-exist in the universe, and they are interrelated, interconnected, and interdependent.  What should concern us is the degree of negative energy as compared with the degree or amount of positive energy that we see manifest in our world.  The direction of things.  Are people getting healthier, wiser, more stable and productive?  Is life robust?  Or are we experiencing increased negative energies in our everyday lives?  Are you feeling more optimistic or more pessimistic as the days go by?

The Quantum Sociological Perspective that the Mysterious Dr. M. presents in the Handbook is a key to understanding how you and I can and do participate (wittingly and unwittingly) in shifting the balance between positive and negative energies and thereby creating cracks or sealing the cracks through which Negative Unpredictable Consequences can come into our lives.  Some negative consequences are predictable.  If you stick your hand on a hot plate, you will be burned.  But there are also Negative Unpredictable Consequences.  The experiences of sickness, loss, tragedy, obstacles, unforeseen evils, being overwhelmed, and death that can force their way into your life like a sudden and unanticipated wind.

What Dr. M. is pointing out in the message about Creating Peaceful Space is that the more you witness the manifestation of negative energies in your world, the more important it is for you to strive to Create Peaceful Space as a counterbalancing force.  It is all about energies!  Did you get this?
